Why your SSD died without warning, and what it means for recovery

A hard drive usually tells you it’s dying. It clicks, it grinds, it slows down for weeks before it finally quits. An SSD almost never does that. Why SSDs fail differently to hard drives

A hard drive stores data on spinning magnetic platters with a mechanical arm reading them, so mechanical wear shows up as noise and slowdown before total failure. An SSD has no moving parts. Your files live in NAND flash memory chips, managed by a small onboard controller that decides where every piece of data physically sits and keeps track of it.

When an SSD fails, it’s almost always the controller or the firmware that goes, not the memory chips themselves. A controller failure can happen instantly, often triggered by a firmware bug, a bad update, a power spike, or simply wearing out after enough write cycles. The drive can go from working perfectly to completely invisible to your computer in the time it takes to reboot.
